TCA peels: risks and regulation

A precise European cosmetic framework

Trichloroacetic acid (CAS 76-03-9) is prohibited in cosmetic products in the European Union under Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009. This is a cosmetic prohibition, not a statement that every possible medical use is universally prohibited.

Risks that must not be understated

The depth of injury cannot be inferred from concentration alone. Pain, prolonged healing, infection, scarring and pigment alteration are recognised concerns. TCA must never be presented as an ordinary home cosmetic peel.

A cosmetic option to examine

For some superficial cosmetic objectives, pyruvic plus lactic acid may be considered after an appropriate skin assessment. It is not an exact medical substitute for TCA and identical outcomes must not be promised; depending on formula and protocol, it can be a strong cosmetic option without TCA.

The appropriate choice depends on the cosmetic objective, the complete formula, concentration, pH, contact time, skin condition and intended setting. A percentage alone never predicts the full effect.
